PUBLIC NOTICE -  2024 Election Certification of Unopposed Candidate for City Commissioner Group 5

City Elections:

The Regular Municipal Election for the election of City of Plant City, City Commissioner is held each year on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in April.

The City Commission consists of five (5) members who are elected at large.  Commissioners shall be elected for a term of (3) three years unless elected to fill a vacancy occurring by death, resignation, or removal in accordance with the terms of the City Charter.  Newly elected Commissioners shall take office at twelve o′clock noon on the first Monday in June after the election or as soon thereafter as practical, except in case of election to fill a vacancy caused by death, resignation, or removal.

As of October 2023, City Commissioner's Yearly Salary is $9,366.80. 

Each seat on the City Commission is designated by number as groups 1 through 5.  Each candidate running for City Commission shall indicate the group in which he or she is a candidate when qualifying.

Selection of Mayor and Vice-Mayor:

Each year during the first regular meeting in June following the annual election, the City Commission elects by majority vote one of its members to serve as Mayor-Commissioner for a period of one year.  Upon the selection of such Mayor, he or she shall designate from other Commissioners to serve as Vice-Mayor for a period of one year.

Requirements to Run:

Candidates must be registered voters and have all the qualifications of electors of the city.  Candidates shall also be residents living within city limits of the City of Plant City for no less than one (1) year prior to qualifying to run for office.  

Election Qualifying Period:

Election Qualifying begins at Noon of the fiftieth day prior to the date of holding the regular April election and ends no later than noon of the forty-sixth day prior to the regular April election date.

In accordance with the Florida Division of Elections, Florida Election Code, the qualifying time period to submit candidate filing forms to qualify for election to run for City Commissioner are strictly enforced and are not flexible.   

Election Qualifying Packets that include election information and candidate filing forms needed to run for City Commissioner are available for pick-up within the City Clerk's Office beginning in January prior to the April election.

Unopposed Candidates:

Notwithstanding any charter provision to the contrary, the name of any unopposed candidate for the office of City Commissioner shall not appear on any ballot and such candidate shall be deemed to have voted for himself at the regular municipal election. In the event that no candidate is opposed for election and no matters of referendum are to be submitted, then in such event the regular municipal election shall not be held. The City Clerk shall certify as elected all unopposed candidates.
